IIO Investigates Police-Involved Incident in Chilliwack (IIO 2020-100)

Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has deployed a team to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Chilliwack.

On Saturday, May 23 at approximately 5:30 pm, Chilliwack RCMP received a report of a man with a firearm at a residence in the 46000 block of Christina Drive.

When police arrived, the man reportedly shot at them. Uninjured, the officers called the RCMP Emergency Response Team. After approximately 6 hours of attempted negotiations, shots were fired by police. Advanced Life Support was called, and the man died at the scene.

 Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
