Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Maple Ridge.
Information from the RCMP states that at about 10:15 p.m. on May 11, 2022, officers responded to a report of a man alleged to be intoxicated and aggressive in front of a residence in the 10300-block of 238A Street.
Police located the man and placed him under arrest before transporting him to Ridge Meadows RCMP cells.
At about 5:15 a.m. the following morning (May 12), the man was found to be in medical distress. The man was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions may have played in the man’s condition.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
