Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Port Alberni.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on December 23, 2020 at approximately 6:40 p.m., police received a report that a man was on the roof of a 12-story residential building in the 4200-block of Morton Street. When officers arrived, they located the man on the roof with a weapon. While members were reportedly speaking to the man, he harmed himself.
Emergency Health Services attended and transported him to a local area hospital. A short time later, the man was pronounced deceased.
The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the death.
