Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.
On October 26, 2020, the Vancouver Police Department notified the IIO that earlier on the same day at approximately 1:20 p.m., officers located a man exhibiting erratic behaviour on West Hastings Street between Abbott and Carrall streets. Police took the man into custody, and the man went into medical distress shortly thereafter. Medical assistance was provided on scene until Emergency Health Services arrived and transported the man to a local hospital.
The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction played in the man’s injury.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
