Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Campbell River.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on July 8, 2021 at approximately 9:00 a.m., police unsuccessfully attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle reportedly did not stop and departed.
Shortly thereafter, police located the driver, a man, near a business in the 2000-block of South Island Highway. An interaction occurred between the man and an officer who was assisted by a police service dog. Shots were fired by police, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
An officer also sustained injuries during the incident, and a police service dog was killed.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
