Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Burnaby where one man died.
Information provided by the Burnaby RCMP states that at about 12:17 a.m. on February 28, 2024, police and Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to a call on the 2200 block of Douglas Road to treat an unconscious male.
The man regained consciousness, but police then arrested him on an unrelated matter.
Shortly after that, the man again lost consciousness. EHS attempted life-saving measures, but the man was later pronounced deceased.
The IIO was notified the same day and has now commenced an investigation.
Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what happened leading up to and during the incident, and what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the death.
