Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to an incident in Vancouver.

The IIO is asking anyone who observed a man interacting with police mid-span on the Georgia viaduct at about 1:00 a.m. on March 23, 2022, to please contact our office via our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website. The interaction occurred on a section of the viaduct that was closed for filming, but the man was not associated with the project.

Incident Summary

As detailed in the previous release, information reported by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that at approximately 1:00 a.m. on March 23, 2022, there was an interaction between a male pedestrian and police mid-span on the Georgia Street viaduct. The man was transported to the VPD jail and was later released.

On March 25, police became aware that at some time on March 23 the man sustained serious injuries. The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
