IIO is Seeking Witnesses to an Officer-Involved Shooting in Abbotsford (2026-171)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Abbotsford overnight.

Preliminary information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that around 11:30 p.m. on July 26, 2026, officers were at a commercial gas station in the 30000-block of Matsqui Place as part of an ongoing investigation. Police at one point observed two men believed to be involved in property crime.

As officers attempted to arrest the two men, they got into a grey Dodge Ram Pickup truck and drove away from the scene. At one point during that interaction, an officer discharged their firearm.

The pickup truck began travelling westbound on Highway 1 from Mt. Lehman Road but was last observed by police travelling into Langley.

Shortly after 3 a.m. on July 27, RCMP officers in Langley responded to a call about an unknown pickup in front of a residence with a man inside. Officers responded to the 27200 block of 30 Avenue and located the Dodge pickup from the previous evening in Abbotsford. One man was located deceased inside the truck.

Police are continuing to look for the second man involved in the incident, while IIO investigators would also like to speak to the man.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident in Abbotsford Sunday evening or who saw the pickup truck arrive and park in Langley early Monday morning, is urged to contact the IIO.

There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:

1. If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
2. If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
