IIO Providing Update to March Police-Involved Shooting in Fort St. John (2026-075)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update to a police-involved shooting that occurred on March 29 in Fort St. John (IIO 2026-075).

Around 3:15 a.m., members of the RCMP conducted a vehicle stop on a black Ford pickup truck near the intersection of 86 Street and 97 Avenue. There were two people inside the truck at the time.

During the interaction with police that followed, a weapon was reportedly involved, and an officer discharged their firearm, injuring the man who had been in the passenger seat of the Ford.

He was taken by ambulance to a hospital with serious injuries.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and commenced an investigation, which remains underway.

To date, investigators have identified multiple witnesses and conducted interviews. They have also received several reports, including forensic analysis, and are awaiting the receipt of additional medical information.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
