Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking further witnesses to, and video footage of, an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Surrey on the afternoon of May 29, 2026 (2026-117).
Around 1 p.m., Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers initially responded to a call about an assault at a building on the 13300 block of Old Yale Road. After arriving, police located one person suffering from stab wounds.
SPS officers then arrived at a nearby park on Old Yale Road near King George Boulevard where a second person was also suffering from stab wounds.
Police located a man who was identified by witnesses as having been involved in the assaults. There was then an interaction, and the man was shot by police. He was taken to a hospital with injuries but later pronounced deceased.
Officers and paramedics provided aid but one of the people suffering from stab wounds was pronounced deceased. The other was taken to a hospital with injuries.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and initiated an investigation, which remains ongoing.
Investigators would like to speak to anyone who has video footage but has not yet contacted the IIO.
To date, the IIO has canvassed for witnesses and collected evidence, including video footage. Investigators have also conducted interviews and expect that process to continue.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
