Surrey – The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has completed its investigation of a fatal incident in Revelstoke and have released jurisdiction. The IIO investigation has concluded there is no connection between the male’s death and the actions of the police.
Background
RCMP notified the IIO on October 17, 2017, that shortly before 1:30 p.m. (PST), Revelstoke RCMP pulled over a vehicle in the 700 block of Victoria Road believed to be connected to an ongoing Calgary police investigation. Containment was set up around the vehicle and additional emergency response resources were staged nearby. Efforts were made to attempt to communicate with driver who was inside the vehicle and unresponsive.
The RCMP’s Southeast District Emergency Response team was called in to assist and shortly after 6:08 p.m. (PST), officers approached the vehicle and located a male inside the vehicle with undetermined injuries. Medical assistance was immediately provided, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation
The Police Act requires the IIO to investigate incidents where there is serious harm or death as a result of police action. The IIO investigation concluded that there is no connection between any of the actions of police and the death of the affected person. As such, the IIO has released jurisdiction of this matter.
