SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that a team of investigators has been deployed to an officer-involved shooting in New Westminster.
In the early morning hours of Nov. 8, 2012, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) responded to a 911 call concerning shots fired and located an adult male in a parking lot near the Starlight Casino. Police cordoned off the area and over several hours attempted to engage the male. At approximately 10:45 hours, an officer-involved shooting occurred and as a result, the male sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
The IIO was notified at 11:03 hours and has deployed nine investigative personnel (including the IIO Specialized Team) to the scene and to the NWPD offices. Once there, they will meet with the designated NWPD liaison officer. Additional IIO investigators including the Manager, Affected Persons, are on standby in the event they need to respond.
The IIO and the involved police service (NWPD) will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July, 2012. The MOU provides specific direction where there is a concurrent investigation.
As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
