SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that its investigators have been deployed to an incident in Prince George early on March 8, 2013.

At approximately 12:05 a.m., RCMP in Prince George attended an Upland Street apartment building in response to a complaint.   Once at the location, the officer exited his vehicle and according to police, subsequently observed one of the males leaving the scene on foot.  During the subsequent pursuit, the officer observed the male affected person fall approximately eight metres down an embankment.  He sustained serious injuries during the fall.  BC Ambulance Service attended and transported the male to the hospital where he remains.

The IIO was notified at 7:30 a.m., on  March 8, 2013.  A team of four IIO investigators including a Forensic Specialist will arrive in Prince George this afternoon.  Upon their arrival, they will meet with the RCMP liaison officer and initiate the investigation.

The IIO and the Prince George RCMP will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.  In particular, the MOU clarifies roles and responsibilities in those cases where there is a concurrent investigation. In this case, the RCMP will remain responsible for any concurrent investigation involving the actions of the affected person.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.

Please note that no additional information is available at the present time.
