Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update to an October 2025 incident in Vancouver (IIO 2025-236).
Shortly after 11 p.m. on October 10, Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers attended a motor vehicle incident in the 1300 block of West Georgia Street where a black Tesla had collided with a parked vehicle.
The passenger was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the man driving was taken into police custody, placed in a police wagon and driven to the VPD jail. Upon arrival, the man was found to be in medical distress, and aid was provided until Emergency Health Services arrived and took him to a hospital.
The man was placed on life support but was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation.
To date, the IIO has collected and reviewed evidence, including medical reports, witness statements and video footage.
The investigation into the incident continues.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
