For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-284 into an incident in Kamloops where one man sustained a serious injury.
At about 4:00 p.m. on October 24, 2022, officers responded to a call regarding a man who was behaving erratically and in possession of a weapon at a residence in the 2000-block of Pacific Way.
Police attempted to negotiate with the man for several hours, and less-lethal force options were eventually used to take the man into custody at about 8:35 p.m. Shortly before being taken into custody, the man sustained a self-inflicted injury.
Emergency Health Services had been staged nearby and transported the man to the hospital.
Medical information and a civilian witness confirm that the only injury the man sustained that meets the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act was self-inflicted. Accordingly, following a review of the evidence, the Chief Civilian Director has determined that the officers are not responsible for the man’s injury.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
