Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-163 into an incident in Saanich.
At about 12:00 p.m. on July 7, 2022, police responded to a motor vehicle incident near Cook Street and Cloverdale Avenue. One man sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
Independent witnesses and the affected person confirm that the serious harm he sustained were self-inflicted, and only minor injuries were sustained while being taken into police custody.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including statements from independent witnesses, information from the affected person, video footage, and forensic evidence – and determined that the serious injuries were not caused by police action.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
