For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concludes the investigation into an incident in Vancouver.
As indicated in the previous release, on June 6, 2021 at approximately 9:30 p.m., police responded to a call regarding a woman who had allegedly committed an offence at a residential building on East Hastings Street. When officers attended the door of the unit and asked to speak to the woman, she exited the building via a second-story window and fell to the ground.
Emergency Health Services were called, and the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Based on the evidence, the officers were acting appropriately in attempting to arrest the woman in response to the allegations, and her injuries were caused by her decision to exit from the second-floor window. As a result, the actions of police were not responsible for those injuries. The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
