For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-108 into an incident on the Pattullo Bridge where one man is believed to have died.
Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on May 15, 2022, members of the Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a man near the railing on the Pattullo Bridge.
When police arrived, the man was on the other side of the railing and officers attempted to persuade him to climb back over to safety. A short time later, the man fell from the bridge and is not believed to have survived.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including civilian witness statements, police radio transmissions, and other police information – and determined that police action did not play a role in the man’s tragic death. Police records reflect several requests for negotiators to attend, but unfortunately none were available to assist. Despite their efforts, the officers on scene were unable to persuade the man to return to safety and cannot be held responsible for the sad outcome.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
