For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the death of one man in Sooke on June 27, 2023 (IIO 2023-172).
At approximately 1:50 p.m., members of the Sooke RCMP were called to a residence by a male who appeared to be in emotional distress. Officers responded to the scene, but the man was later found deceased.
On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including police statements, 911 recordings, police radio transmissions – and determined there is no causal connection between any action or inaction of an officer and the Affected Person’s death.
Based on the available evidence, police actions could not have prevented this tragic death.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
