Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now closed investigation 2024-120 into the arrest of a man following a traffic stop conducted by members of the Surrey Police Service, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police Department.
At around 12:30 a.m. on May 23, 2024, police engaged in a traffic stop after a reported violation near 144 Street and 82A Avenue. Officers subsequently moved to arrest the man driving the vehicle.
There was an interaction, and the man was arrested, suffering an injury in the process. He later reported the incident to the IIO on May 27, 2024.
The Chief Civilian Director’s delegate has now reviewed the evidence – including medical records and police information – and determined the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm as defined under Part 11 of the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
