For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded two investigations into medical incidents in Vancouver.
As indicated in the previous release, two men, arrested separately regarding unrelated warrants on October 15 and 16, 2021, both went into medical distress on October 16 while in Vancouver Police Department custody.
In both cases, independent medical evidence confirms that neither man’s medical condition met the definition of serious harm, and both were released following treatment. Video evidence corroborates that ongoing checks of their wellbeing were completed during their time in cells, and Emergency Health Services were called when their medical distress became apparent.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence and determined that the medical incidents experienced by the two men does not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act. The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
