Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms that investigators have been deployed to an in-custody death involving Surrey RCMP.
According to police, On March 2, 2016 officers responded to reports of a male causing a disturbance. The male was reportedly arrested without incident and subsequently collapsed. The affected male was transported to hospital where he was announced deceased.
The IIO was notified at 7:50 p.m. and deployed investigators to the scene. The initial focus of the IIO investigation will be to determine if there is a connection between the male’s death and the actions or inactions of the officers.
The IIO will not be providing any information about the deceased; this remains the responsibility of the BC Coroners Service.
No further information or updates will be provided at this time.
