IIO is Investigating a Death in Elk Valley (2022-032)

Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Elk Valley.

Information reported by the RCMP states that at approximately 1:50 p.m. local time on February 25, 2022, police received a call for assistance from a man in the 900-block of Alpine Way. When officers arrived, they asked the man to come to the front door to speak to them. A short time later, after hearing a concerning noise, officers entered the home and found the man injured.

Despite the life-saving efforts of Emergency Health Services who had been staged nearby, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The IIO was notified of the incident the day it occurred and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
