Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a motor vehicle incident that occurred in Burnaby and resulted in the death of one person and injured two others.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that shortly before 5:00 a.m. on July 19, 2023, there was a collision between a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a taxi near the intersection of Hastings and Abbott streets. The driver of the truck reportedly continued eastbound on Hastings Street towards Burnaby following the collision.
It is reported that the Silverado was subsequently involved in a collision with a Toyota Supra at the intersection of Hastings and Willingdon.
Despite medical assistance, the female passenger of the Supra was pronounced deceased. The drivers of both vehicles were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred as it was reported that a VPD officer observed the truck travelling at a high rate of speed between the two collisions. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what actions, if any, the officer took and whether they played any role in the second collision.
The IIO is asking any person with relevant information or video footage of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
