Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident that occurred overnight in Richmond.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 11:00 p.m. yesterday (August 22, 2024), police responded to a report of a man setting a sign on fire in the 9800 block of Glenthorne Drive.

It is reported that when police arrived, there was an interaction with the man who reportedly produced a weapon. The man was shot by police and transported to a hospital for treatment. It is reported one officer also sustained a serious injury and was also taken to the hospital.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and if any force used by police was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.
