Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Chemainus.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on August 19, 2020 at approximately 6:45 p.m., police were called to conduct a wellness check regarding a man. Police located him outside a business in the 3000-block of Oak Street and when officers attempted to apprehend him, an interaction reportedly occurred. He was then transported to a local area hospital for assessment.
On February 3, 2021, the RCMP became aware that the man may have suffered serious injury during the incident and the IIO was notified the following day.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
