Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Burnaby where one man has died.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 6:00 a.m. on December 16, 2022, police responded to a request for assistance regarding a man at a business in the 6500-block of Hastings Street.
When officers arrived, an interaction occurred, and the man went into medical distress.
Despite medical assistance from those on scene, the man was subsequently pronounced deceased.
IIO investigators have been deployed to the area to commence an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions may have played in the man’s death.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
