Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is announcing today that it is investigating an incident in Courtenay that occurred on August 17, 2020.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on that day at approximately 8:10 a.m., officers attended a residence and spoke to a man as part of an ongoing investigation. Hours later at approximately 10:00 p.m., the man’s roommate called police to report that the man was not responding to knocks on his door.
Police again attended the residence and found the man deceased.
The IIO continues to investigate to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the death of the man.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
