Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Port Coquitlam.

Information reported by the RCMP states that at about 8:15 a.m. on April 6, 2022, police responded to a report of a man alleged to be looking into vehicles and approaching customers at a business in the 1500-block of Oxford Connector. Police attended and spoke to the man who then departed.

A short time later, police received information that the man was allegedly going to commit a crime and officers began searching for him.

The man was located reportedly walking in traffic just before 10:00 a.m. in the 1900-block of Lougheed Highway where he was arrested.

It was later found that the man had sustained a serious but not life-threatening injury during his arrest. The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
