Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Surrey where one man sustained serious injuries.
Information provided by the Metro Vancouver Transit Police (Transit Police) states that on February 24, 2022, two officers from the Transit Police were responding to an incident in the 10200-block of City Parkway. One officer was on foot, and the other was in a police vehicle.
There was a collision between the officer on foot and the police vehicle which resulted in the officer on foot sustaining serious injuries.
This incident was reported to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) on January 24, 2023, and given the level of injury, the OPCC notified the IIO on June 6, 2023.
Initial investigative steps have confirmed that the injuries do meet the IIO’s threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act. The investigation remains underway and will determine whether any officer may have committed an offence.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
