Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the death of one man while being arrested by members of the RCMP in Chilliwack.
Information provided by the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP states that this afternoon (April 22, 2024), police responded to a report of a fight in the area of Mary Street* and Patten Avenue.
It is reported that a man was arrested by police, then went into medical distress. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has deployed investigators to begin an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of police actions during the arrest and what role, if any, they may have played in the man’s death.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
