For Immediate Release

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the March 2025 injuries of a woman in Parksville.

Information from the RCMP states that at about 8:40 p.m. on March 24, 2025, officers with the Oceanside RCMP responded to an abandoned 911 call received from a room at a local motel.

When officers arrived, it was noted that the room the call came from was registered to a woman who was the subject of a current check wellbeing request. There was an interaction between the woman and the officers, and the woman was arrested.

The IIO was notified on April 7, 2025 when the RCMP became aware that the woman had sustained injuries while being arrested that may be subject to the IIO’s mandate. The IIO has begun an investigation.

There are two factors that the IIO takes into account at the beginning of each investigation:

    1. If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
    2. If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.

If the injury is found to be serious harm, and there is a connection to police action or inaction, the chief civilian director will determine if there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence has been committed.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information about the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
