Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to a July 1, 2024 motor vehicle incident in Greenwood where one person was injured.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 2:35 p.m. on July 1, 2024, an officer was driving an unmarked black Chevrolet Tahoe and was in the process of repositioning their police vehicle to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of North Government Avenue (Highway 3) and Campbell Street. While they were repositioning, there was a collision between the Tahoe and a grey Hyundai Tucson.

One of the four occupants of the Tucson sustained more serious injuries, while two others sustained minor injuries. The fourth occupant in the Tucson was uninjured in the collision. The officer driving the Tahoe also sustained minor injuries.

The IIO was notified of the incident the same day it occurred and commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps appear to confirm that the person’s injuries meet the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act. Further investigation will seek to determine whether the officer committed any offence during the incident.

The IIO is asking any person who saw the collision or who has video footage to please contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
