Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC confirms that the affected person, a man, involved in a recent collision in Kamloops has died (IIO 2023-211).
The man was riding his motorcycle in Kamloops on July 22, 2023 when he was involved in a collision with stationary emergency vehicles, one of which was a police vehicle, and sustained serious injuries. On August 1, 2023, the man died in hospital.
The IIO investigation continues and will determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.
Incident Summary
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 10:55 p.m. on July 22, 2023, an officer responding to an unrelated incident parked and exited their police vehicle on Highway 1 westbound at Holman Road.
A short time later, there was a collision between a motorcycle, the parked police vehicle, and another stationary emergency vehicle. The rider of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries in the collision and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident the following day, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the collision, including the location of all vehicles prior to and during the collision.
