For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a police-involved shooting incident in Grand Forks (IIO 2023-243).
In the morning on August 13, 2023, police located a vehicle that had been reported stolen at a rural residence on Willow Road. A man was inside the residence and did not exit when told by police to do so.
At about 4:30 p.m., the man exited the residence with a weapon, and was shot by police. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and survived his injury.
The Interim Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including scene and firearm examinations, medical information, and police records – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that a criminal offence was committed by any officer.
The IIO investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be published following conclusion of a concurrent police investigation into the actions of the affected person.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
