Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is seeking witnesses to a motor vehicle incident that occurred on Monday morning in Nanaimo.
Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that on January 14, 2019, at approximately 12:41 a.m, an officer in a marked patrol vehicle attempted to stop a white pick-up truck.
It is reported the officer observed it travelling southbound along Highway 1 in the northbound lane. Shortly after the vehicle was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle between Cedar Road and Duke Point.
A male driver from each vehicle did not survive their injuries. There were no other parties involved.
The IIO is asking anyone who observed or might have dash cam footage of the vehicle on Highway 1 to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
