SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that a team of investigators has been deployed to an officer-involved shooting in Burnaby.

The RCMP advised the IIO that in the early morning hours of Jan. 31, 2013, officers responded to a 911 call concerning a man with a knife in the 4100 block of Albert Street. While on route to the call, an officer encountered an adult male who allegedly matched the description provided by the caller, at Hastings St. and MacDonald Ave. A shooting occurred and as a result, the man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

The IIO was notified at 0145 hours and deployed seven investigators. Upon their arrival, they met with the dedicated Burnaby RCMP liaison officer and initiated their investigation.

The IIO and the Burnaby RCMP will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July, 2012. As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
