Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concludes an investigation into an incident in Prince George.
On October 1, 2020 at approximately 9:10 a.m., a man was arrested without incident by the Prince George RCMP at the intersection of George Street and First Avenue regarding a prior matter. He was transported to the RCMP detachment and video evidence shows the man moving around without issue while in RCMP custody. At no time is any force used against the man.
Later on October 1, the man attended court and was transferred to the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre (PGRCC) by BC Sheriffs. Two days later, on October 3, the man was found deceased in his cell at PGRCC. Post-mortem information confirms that there is no evidence of injury or trauma contributing to his death.
The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including video evidence and medical information – and determined that the death of the man is not the result of the actions or inaction of any officer. The investigation is therefore concluded. Investigations by the BC Coroners Service and BC Corrections continue.
