Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death that occurred in Surrey.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on the June 28, 2021 at approximately 12:30 a.m., police responded to several reports of a man behaving erratically in the Newton area. Officers were able to locate the man in the yard at a residence in the 6900-block* of 134A Street where he was taken into custody.
Shortly thereafter, the man reportedly went into medical distress and was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The IIO will investigate to determine if police actions or inactions may have played a role in the death.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
