Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Victoria.
Information reported by the Victoria Police Department states that early on March 24, 2022, police responded to a request to check the wellness of a woman and child.
Later the same day, the woman called Emergency Health Services regarding her child. Both mother and child were transported to the hospital where life-saving measures were taken, but the infant was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the death. The BC Coroners Service and Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) are also conducting investigations related to the death.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
