Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Nanaimo.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on September 23, 2021 at approximately 1:50 a.m., officers responded to a request for assistance regarding a male in crisis at a residence in the 1500-block of Extension Road. Police attended and the man sustained a non-life-threatening injury while being taken into custody.
Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO was advised of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
