Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Victoria.
Information provided by the Victoria Police Department indicates that on July 24, 2020 at approximately 8:15 a.m., officers responded to a call at an address in the 1900-block of Douglas Street where a man was reported to have a weapon. Upon arrival, police report they attempted to engage the man in conversation but were unsuccessful.
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) attended. At approximately 11:45 a.m., the man exited his suite and officers report he did not respond to commands. A less-lethal force option was used, and the man was arrested. The man was transported to hospital and was found to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
